Killer Whale Range Map from the American Cetacean Society

Did you know that Killer Whales (Orcinus orca) are one of the most widely distributed animals on the Earth? As can be seen in the map above, their habitat stretches from the icy polar oceans to the warm waters of the tropics. They spend time out in the open ocean as well as in more shallow coastal waters. They also live in very stable family groups, and closely-related groups communicate using quite sophisticated collections of shared calls. Citizen scientists on Whale FM are classifying these calls by sorting them into categories based on similarity to help scientists better understand the whale dialect.
