As we celebrate one billion classifications on Zooniverse, we continue sharing messages from volunteers whose curiosity has become part of our own story. Today’s letter comes from someone who has been with us almost since the very beginning.

Linda Sass Constandi joined Galaxy Zoo in 2007, shortly after reading about the project in a newspaper. Nearly two decades later, Linda is still classifying, learning and cheering on new discoveries.

Back in 2007 I was reading a newspaper (I forget which one!) and came across an article asking for volunteers to help decipher galaxies. I couldn’t believe what I was reading. I was so intrigued and so happy.

The next day I went to the library to use their computer, because I didn’t have one yet. I started reading all the information and instructions on your website and was so excited. I could finally be involved, somehow, in a passion I’d always had.

I learned so much. There was so much beauty to discover. I couldn’t believe I was part of such an unbelievable journey.

One of the things that made me especially happy was seeing my name, together with so many others, on the image of one of my favourite galaxies, the Sombrero Galaxy. It made me feel that I truly belonged.

As time went on, work and life took up more of my time, but I always tried to come back whenever I could.

I also loved taking part in the neutrino projects in Antarctica, and even joined a live Zoom session with two scientists working there. Being able to do that was one of the great thrills of my life.

I believe this website should be in every school and university. There really is something here for everyone.
