The reason we can see galaxies is because of the light emitted by the many stars that lie within them. However, sometime the stars that lie within our own galaxy, the Milky Way, can get in the way when we’re trying to observe distant galaxies. All of the dots surrounding the central galaxy in this image from Galaxy Zoo are stars within the Milky Way.
