Amazing Galaxy of the Week – Planetary Nebula

PN G174.2-14.6

PN G174.2-14.6

Sometimes planetary nebulae like this one appear in Galaxy Zoo data. They may slightly resemble a galaxy in a poor quality image but they are very different objects. Planetary nebula are formed at the end of a star’s life, after it becomes a red giant and sheds its outer layers of gas. A white dwarf is left glowing at the centre. This is the eventual fate of our Sun.
