The Milky Way Project features some of the most beautiful images out of all the projects run by the Zooniverse, so you’ll no doubt be delighted to hear that we’ve added 12,000 new images! The data come from the Cygnus-X and SMOG surveys. Both of these surveys mapped roughly 20-square-degree areas of the outer Galaxy. Cygnus-X in particular focused on the nearest star-forming region to the Sun, containing hundreds of hot, massive stars lighting up overlapping bubbles, pillars, and bright-rimmed clouds, the same kinds of structures that MWP volunteers have been successfully hunting and cataloguing elsewhere in our Galaxy.
