Citizen scientists taking part in the Whale FM project have been categorising the calls made by killer whales and pilot whales (both of which are actually species of dolphin). The map above shows how some of the calls have been categorised. It essentially shows whale words! If the circles are larger, more people have matched them to their neighbouring circles. The colours indicate different recordings (recorded at different locations and for different groups of whales). If a cluster of calls contains many different colours, it is likely that this type of call is shared amongst different whales, which is very exciting!

You can read more about this on the Whale FM blog here http://blog.whale.fm/, and why not have a go at classifying the calls yourself here http://whale.fm/?
