This outstanding shot from Galaxy Zoo shows a spiral galaxy almost perfectly edge-on to our line-of-sight. The dust and gas the relatively thin disk of the galaxy blocks out the light coming from billions of stars in the bright central bulge. This feature is known as a dust lane.
