Following on from last week’s post I have another outstanding image of two beautiful galaxies right next to each other. The one on the left in this picture is a merger with plenty of star-formation, shown by the bright blue clumps. Classify some amazing galaxies like these today at www.galaxyzoo.org
It is, indeed, an amazing image!
However, I think that the ‘left’ thing is not a merger, but an overlap … the big spiral and the big elliptical are surely engaged in an intricate gravitational dance; however, the strange ‘extension’ of the spiral, towards the elliptical, is (I think) a background spiral, whose (pink) nucleus is just beyond the ‘edge’ of the big spiral.
