From one of our newest projects, Whales as Individuals, comes this incredible photo of a humpback whale fluke streaked with a remarkable patterning. What could have caused this? The answer, from project researcher “tedcheese,” is harrowing:

Those are scars from a severe orca attack! It probably happened when this whale was very young.

Yikes! Thankfully, it looks like the whale is doing okay these days.
