The National Endowment for the Humanities announced their most recent round of funded projects today, including a Level I Digital Humanities Advancement Grant, awarded to Zooniverse Co-Director Samantha Blickhan, for a project called “Scoping Scalable Sustainable DH Infrastructure for Online Crowdsourcing.”

This 1-year project will provide support for Zooniverse team members to carry out an evaluative study of the underlying code, functionality, and user interface of our main tools for text transcription and analysis. The effort will include a front- and back-end code review as well as creation and dissemination of user and volunteer surveys to determine what does and doesn’t work for our user community.

At the end of the project, the team will produce an overview of the work necessary to ensure the long-term usability of these tools and ensure that the code is able to be maintained in the long term in a way that is efficient and sustainable. This overview will be used to apply for a second, larger round of funding to carry out the proposed work beginning in 2025.
