This fascinating satellite image is from our Floating Forests project. It shows Sea Lion Island, on the south side of the Falklands, surrounded by a gorgeous lush kelp forest in March of 2015. You can see an island ringed in lush, iridescent dark green. This dark green is the giant kelp, Macrocystis pyrifera, as seen from the Landsat 8 satellite. To see what the island looks like closeup, see https://www.google.com/maps?q=-52.4583480523+-59.1158827869&ll=-52.4583480523,-59.1158827869&t=k&z=12 and zoom in on the areas where you can see kelp in the Floating Forests image. You’ll see what look like feathers breaking the surface – these are blades of the giant kelp!
